Malacology

Is a branch of zoology

Malacology is focusing on the study of molluscs including aspects such as their biology, ecology, and classification.

The museum features an exhibition showcasing both Mediterranean and global seashells. The relationship between humans and shells, the ‘skeletons’ of molluscs, has been multifaceted.

Inhabiting not only the seas but also rivers, lakes, and dry land, shells were utilized by prehistoric humans as ornaments and were attributed with magical properties. For instance, certain shells, such as the cypria, were symbols of procreation in ancient Rome. Interestingly, a species of cypria, the Monetaria moneta, was used as currency among African peoples in the past.

This interest and fascination can be attributed to the beauty and geometric precision of shells, their unique and fantastical shapes, and the vibrant colours that attract collectors and fascinate so many simple enthusiasts on their walks along the seashore.
